Restorative Care
When a tooth is too damaged for a filling, a crown or bridge rebuilds it. We take a 3D digital scan of the tooth right here in the office — no tray of impression material — and the laboratory builds your crown or bridge from that scan.
Crowns
A crown covers a tooth completely, restoring its shape and letting it take normal chewing force again. It is what we use when a tooth is cracked, worn down, heavily decayed, or has broken around an old filling. We match the crown to the color of the teeth around it.
Bridges
A bridge fills the gap left by a missing tooth by anchoring a replacement to the teeth on either side. It restores your bite and keeps the neighboring teeth from drifting into the space, which is what tends to happen when a gap is left alone. A bridge is fixed in place — it is not something you take out.
3D digital scanning, no impression tray
We capture the tooth with a 3D digital scanner instead of a tray of impression material, so there is nothing to bite into and nothing setting in your mouth. The scan goes to the dental laboratory that builds your crown or bridge, and they send the finished restoration back to us to fit and adjust. You will usually leave the first visit with a temporary while that work is being made.
Common questions
What is the difference between a crown and a filling?
A filling replaces the part of a tooth that decay removed and works when enough healthy tooth is left to support it. A crown covers the whole tooth and is used when there is not — after a crack, a fracture, or extensive decay. We will show you what we are seeing and explain which one applies.
Do I still have to bite into a tray of impression material?
Not for a crown or bridge. We use a 3D digital scanner, which is a small wand we move around the tooth — nothing to bite into and nothing setting in your mouth. The scan is what the laboratory uses to build your crown or bridge, and it comes back to us to fit.
How long does a crown last?
That depends heavily on the tooth, your bite, and how you care for it, so we will not put a number on yours without looking at it. What helps most is routine cleanings, treating grinding if you grind, and not using the tooth on very hard foods.
What about cost?
Every mouth is different, so the honest answer is that we need to see yours before we can tell you what anything will cost. Call the office and we will talk it through — and consultations for dentures and implants are free.
