How an implant works

An implant is a small post placed in the jawbone that takes the place of a missing tooth's root. The bone heals around it over a period of months, and once it is stable we attach the replacement tooth on top. It is a longer process than a bridge or a denture because that healing time is not something that can be rushed.

Implant-supported dentures

Implants can support a full arch rather than a single tooth. Snap-in dentures click onto implants and come out for cleaning; all-on-4 and all-on-x are fixed in place and stay in. Both stop the movement that makes a conventional lower denture frustrating to wear.

Whether implants are an option for you

Implants need enough jawbone to hold them, and bone recedes over time where teeth have been missing. A panoramic x-ray shows us what you have to work with. Healing also depends on general health and on smoking, so we will ask about both. If implants are not a good fit, we will say so and talk about what is.

How long does getting a dental implant take?

It spans several months, most of which is healing rather than appointments — the bone needs time to fuse to the implant before the replacement tooth goes on. The number of visits depends on your situation, and we will map it out for you before you commit to anything.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

It depends mostly on how much jawbone is available to support the implant, plus your general health. A panoramic x-ray answers the first part quickly. Come in for a free consultation and we will tell you honestly either way.

What about cost?

Every mouth is different, so the honest answer is that we need to see yours before we can tell you what anything will cost. Call the office and we will talk it through — and consultations for dentures and implants are free.
